Description
We are an indie game studio founded in 2016, passionate about creating fun, meaningful, and visually engaging games from a player’s perspective. Our goal is to craft hand-made experiences with care and love, while meeting high-quality standards. What started as a vision for a creative, safe space has grown into a team dedicated to making games we love and showcasing the work of talented local artists.
History
Early historyIn mid-2016, Jorge Garcia left his office job in web programming to chase his passion, teaming up with his friend Hector Sanchez. After a few attempts at their dream project, inspired by the pop culture of the ’80s and ’90s, they realized they needed someone with more graphical skills. That’s when Josue Hernandez joined, completing the core trio.
Crowdfunding CampaignOnce Neon City Riders was ready, they ran a Kickstarter campaign. In mid-2017, at Campus Party, they introduced Mecha Studios and the game to the Mexican audience. Thanks to media buzz and community support, the campaign blew past its goal, funding 150% and becoming the most successful video game campaign on Kickstarter Mexico.
Building ExperienceOver the next three and a half years, the team worked hard, learning everything they could about the industry and game development, and attending as many events as possible. Jorge Garcia moderated a panel at PAX South, while Neon City Riders was selected for the Official Selection of PAX Rising at PAX East 2020 and the Indie Showcase 2020 Official Selection at PAX East. Mecha Studios became the first studio from southeastern Mexico to release a multi-platform game internationally, and today remains one of the most important references in Mexican game development.
Launch and ReceptionAfter years of full-time work and self-financing, they finally launched their dream project. Neon City Riders received excellent reviews internationally, especially on consoles, and has been regarded by many as a jewel of Mexican game development. Soon after, they partnered with Limited Run Games to produce physical copies for PS4—which sold out in just 20 minutes—and Nintendo Switch, available in two editions including an Amazon-exclusive version. The game also won Chinelo Game of the Year 2020 and VJMX Best Videogame 2020.
HiatusIn 2021, the pandemic hit, and the studio decided to take a break to recharge. During this time, director Jorge Garcia stayed active in the community, giving talks, traveling to events, and hosting post-mortems of some of their other projects.
Return and New ProjectsIn 2025, Mecha Studios came back, ready to put 10 years of experience into creating games that also highlight local artists. They’re working on several projects at once, starting with Murky: a narrative puzzle adventure where you cast spells, tweak time to make new timelines, and team up with curious creatures on a journey to rediscover your past and escape a world stuck in a three-day cycle.
